The first step in the academic exploration process is assessing your interests, abilities and values.
The academic exploration process is one of the most important journeys a student can take at Texas State. We encourage you to start at step one. However, if you feel like you are in a later stage, go ahead and start there. Don't be afraid if you go through the steps and then take a few steps back.
Our First-Year Advisors are here to assist with every step. Click on each step to learn how your advisor can help you.
Assessing Your Interests, Abilities and Values

Exploring Your Options
You’ve started to understand who you are, what subjects you enjoy, and what you value. Next, you need to learn what options are available to you at Texas State.
Researching and Gathering Information
You have a firm understanding of who you are and what major options are available to you, but you might be asking: What classes are required for this major?

Narrowing Down Options, If Needed
You have an understanding of what opportunities are connected to each of your major options. You may now be asking: What are the pros and cons of each choice?
Selecting or Confirming Your Major
The final step in the academic exploration process is declaring your major. Declare your major by scheduling an appointment with a First-Year Advisor.
