Narrowing Down Options, If Needed
The fourth step in the academic exploration process is narrowing down options, if needed. In this step, you have a firm understanding of who you are, what major options are available, and what requirements and opportunities are connected to each of your options. You probably still have questions like:
- What are the pros and cons of each choice?
- Which of these options is most realistic for me?
- Which option is the best fit for my career goals?
- Which option best fits my interests and values?
Note: If you're asking questions like these, let your academic advisor know that you're close to making a final major decision. Share with them which options you're considering. As you work through your options, you may not immediately identify a major you like, but you’ll quickly begin eliminating those you don’t like, the programs that aren’t for you.
What resources can help you navigate Step Four?
Get out pencil and paper and make an old-fashioned pro and con list.
- List the pros and cons for each of the majors and/or careers you’re considering.
- Compare those pros and cons.
- Eliminate options that are not realistic and eliminate options if the cons outweigh the pros for you.
Ask yourself: Which of these options is the best fit for me? For my abilities and skills? For my values?
Advisor Tip
There is no perfect major or career. Every option will present challenges. You'll just need to determine which challenges you're ready to take on.
