First-Time Academic Warning at Texas State
By now, you have been informed that you have an Academic Warning status beginning in spring 2025. This process is designed to alert you to academic difficulties in time to help you identify the areas where you may be experiencing challenges and determine how best to address them.
Our team of First-Year Advisors knows that students enter the Academic Warning process for many reasons, including personal, financial, health, family, choice of major, or other issues.
We are eager to work with you over the spring semester to help you identify these challenges and find solutions. We are confident that you have the potential to return to good academic standing.
What is Academic Warning?
To be in Good Academic Standing, you must maintain a minimum Texas State Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00. You have been given an Academic Warning status because you earned a Texas State GPA below 2.00.
From this point, you have two semesters (spring and fall 2025) to raise your Texas State GPA to 2.00. Only grades earned at Texas State determine if you are in Good Academic Standing, on Warning, Probation, or Suspended.

Frequently Asked Questions About Academic Probation
-
What is Academic Warning?
Academic Warning is an alert that the quality of your work has not met Texas State’s minimum academic standards. Our team of academic advisors knows that there are many reasons students enter the academic probation process, including personal, financial, health, family, choice of major, or other issues. We are eager to work with you through the next semester to help you identify these challenges and find solutions.
-
What GPA places a student on Academic Warning?
At the end of the fall or spring semester, a student whose Texas State GPA is below 2.00 will be given an Academic Warning status.
Academic Warning only looks at the GPA of classes taken at Texas State. Therefore, transfer, dual, AP, or IB credit does not assist a student in returning to good academic standing, including summer classes taken at community colleges. -
What are the consequences of Academic Warning for first-year students?
You have your 2025 spring and fall semesters to return to good academic standing. If you earn a TXST GPA of 2.00 during this time, you will return to Good Academic Standing. If you remain below a 2.00 TXST GPA by the end of the spring semester, you will receive an Academic Probation status.
-
Will I have a hold on my account?
Yes. All students on Academic Warning will have an Advising Hold added to their record. Our office will lift this hold once you complete your requirements.
-
Can Academic Warning affect my financial aid and scholarships?
Financial Aid is different for every student. We strongly recommend contacting the TXST One Stop for information about your specific aid package.
You can read more about the evaluation of your aid in terms of academic standing on Financial Aid's Maintaining My Eligibility page.
-
Can repeating a course help me get back to Good Academic Standing?
Yes. When a course is taken more than once at Texas State, the second grade (first repeat) and all subsequent grades (repeats) are included in computing the Texas State hours attempted, grade points earned, and GPA.
However, if the last time a course is taken is from another school, that course will meet degree requirements, but the last grade at Texas State counts towards the Texas State GPA.
-
What does it mean to drop a course with a W?
A W counts as an attempt at a course, but does not count toward your GPA. You are allowed six undergraduate Ws at Texas State.
-
Does the time to return to Good Academic Standing change if I am part of the McCoy College of Business?
Yes. To remain in the McCoy College of Business, you have one long semester (spring 2025) to return to Good Academic Standing rather than two. If you are not in good academic standing by the end of the spring semester, you will be removed from your business major and transition to pre-business. You must reapply to the McCoy College of Business once you meet the appropriate requirements.
While you will only have one semester to return to Good Academic Standing to maintain your status in McCoy, you will still have both long semesters to return to Good Academic Standing.

How do I withdraw from my spring 2025 courses if I need to?
Deciding to withdraw from all of your courses is a big decision. Our First-Year Advisors are here to help you make this decision. Please get in touch with our office for guidance.
If you have already made this decision and do not want guidance from a First-Year Advisor, here are the actions you need to complete.
Please complete the form on the Office of the Registrar's website to withdraw for the semester. Withdrawing before the 12th class day will mean you will receive a refund and no Ws on your transcript. After the 12th class day, dropping a class will mean you will receive a W (which means the class will count as an attempt), and you will not receive a refund.
Don't hesitate to contact the TXST One Stop or an advisor for information on dropping after the Census date.
